Don’t mourn: sing

Rebel Diaz said music is resistance, it’s the voice of the poor, here are a selection of songs, to inspire, enlighten, entertain, sooth a broken heart and steel your nerves for the 3-year challenge that lay ahead.

As I posted this, I was listening to the CD Woody Guthrie at 100! Live at the Kennedy Center
This machine kills fascists. Listening as well to, “Note of Hope” Woody Guthrie and Rob Wasserman (2011).

Songs to beat those post-election break-up blues and fuel the revolution.
I can put down some others, as well.

And from Robbie Robertson’s new book of classics,0,7766699.story

So here they are…any more suggestions?

Bruce Springsteen – song: No Surrender
genre: classic rock – year 1984

Well, we made a promise we swore we’d always remember / No retreat, baby, no surrender

artist: Rebel Diaz – song: Which Side Are You On?
genre: revolutionary hip hop – year 20?

Myspace and facebook, they got us stuck on computers
Stuck on stupid bumpin’ music that’s abusive to the shorties
And the nonsense that you spittin’, they just listen and absorb it

For the culture, the life, what it really stands for
This music is resistance, it’s the voice of the poor

Modern version by Billy Bragg Internationale

Stand up, all victims of oppression
For the tyrants fear your might

Don’t cling so hard to your possessions
For you have nothing, if you have no rights
Let racist ignorance be ended
For respect makes the empires fall
Freedom is merely privilege extended
Unless enjoyed by one and all.

So come brothers and sisters
For the struggle carries on
The Internationale
Unites the world in song
So comrades come rally
For this is the time and place
The international ideal
Unites the human race.

In the 1960’s thousands of us sang this as we marched to stop the war!
Country Joe’s Anti Vietnam War Song Woodstock

Robbie Robertson’s When the Night was Young
from his new CD How to become Clairvoyant
We had dreams when the night was young
We were believers when the night was young
We could change the world stop the war
Never seen nothing like this before
But that was way back when the night was young

Solidarity Forever for the Union makes us Strong

Power In Our Union by Billy Bragg

There is power in a factory, power in the land
Power in the hands of a worker
But it all amounts to nothing if together we don’t stand
There is power in a Union

Now the lessons of the past were all learned with workers’ blood
The mistakes of the bosses we must pay for
From the cities and the farmlands to trenches full of mud
War has always been the bosses’ way, sir

CFMEU Union song
We are union through and through we are the CFMEU

The idea concerns the fact that this country wants nostalgia.
They want to go back as far as they can – even if it’s only as far as last week.
Not to face now or tomorrow, but to face backwards.

Civil rights, women’s rights, gay rights: …it’s all wrong.

God damn it, first one wants freedom, then the whole damn world wants freedom.

One Response to Don’t mourn: sing

  1. Doug Nicholls September 19, 2013 at 7:06 am #

We are using political song and theatre more and more in our work for our affiliates and our political education. I have personally edited a book of contemporary political songs by the wonderful Banner Theatre, see their website.

We own a hotel and are meeting soon to consider how to have a festival there.

We are also contemplating coming on an international study visit to Australia next year, perhaps we might link up. Perhaps we should consider publishing a global political song book.
