Congratulations to all the NUW members at Baiada in Laverton for your hard work and fearless efforts over the last four months of negotiations and 13 days on the picket line.
Your resolve has lead to a new Agreement that you were told you would never have.
While many members have said they are grateful and surprised by the amount of support from the movement and community, many other unionists are filled with inspiration and pride at what you have done for your workplace and the Australian Union Movement by standing up for your rights against such odds.
Now every worker at Baiada in Laverton will be paid site rates.
No more cash in hand.
No more $10!
Your redundancy payments have more than doubled.
Union and delegate rights, and procedures to deal with bullying and harassment have improved to protect workers.
4% pay rise each year of 2 year agreement
adelaide gkk workers reinstated;
equal opp clause so that jobs can be applied for fairly;
info on all workers to go past union; arbitration rights at fwa;
casual conversion at 6 months;
Retention of accident make up pay;
Company will not sue union – company had an action of millions of damages;
Consultative committee monthly and
some respect.
My comment:
Now if the Gillard government and employers want another of these disputes then keep the FWA – but really, when there is a lawful strike as here then workers ought to be able to have an effective picket that is not deemed ‘unlawful’ by the judges as here. A protected action withdrawal of labour has to be changed to protect the peaceful assembly, the picket, as a means of enforcing the stoppage – including the stopping of scabs and flow of goods: otherwise there is no right to strike.
See right to strike in this blog.
I recomment that the NUW stratgey and community solidarity with picketing be analysed and the story told so that other unionists can learn how to win.
