I attended outside of Parliament yesterday a TWU protest about the 287 truck deaths. The TWU’s campaign is for Safe Rates. The graveyard will travel around Australia over coming months. The 287 crosses are a sad symbol of those killed in truck crashes in the twelve months since the National Transport Commission criticised:
LOW RATES OF PAY
INCENTIVE-BASED PAYMENT METHODS (SUCH AS PER KILOMETRE OR PER TRIP)
UNPAID WORKING TIME AND DEMURRAGE
THE HYPER-COMPETITIVE NATURE OF THE INDUSTRY AND
THE LOW BARGAINING POWER FACED BY DRIVERS
ECONOMIC PRESSURE COSTS LIVES
See here for the 287 crosses

The TWU will never forgo its responsibility to the public and its members to fight for a safer transport industry.
Yet union OHS rights are under threat (see earlier posts).
