Summary: Federal and state governments of both major political parties, under the influence of vested interests, have failed to implement effective policies for mitigating climate change. Now it is up to citizens, in the spirit of participatory democracy, collectively to insist on substantial climate action to replace the existing tokens. Potential strategies and tactics for the climate action movement will be discussed.

The author: Dr Mark Diesendorf was previously a principal research scientist in CSIRO, Canberra, a senior lecturer in Human Ecology at ANU, and Professor of Environmental Science at UTS. His books are Human Ecology, Human Economy: Ideas for an Ecologically Sustainable Future (co-edited with Clive Hamilton), Greenhouse Solutions with Sustainable Energy, and now Climate Action.
