New direction on environment crisis

John Connor CEO of The Climate Institute at the Crunchtime Conference gave a devastating critque of the Government’s plans to give 58 billion to polluters, with their inadequate targets for CO2 reduction and the failure of the private market ETS model.

Details were given of a new direction needed for investmet in clean energy and green jobs. The response to the GFC includes a low carbon economic recovery. The urgency of citizen action was pressed.

John was a researcher for Dr Peter Macdonald the Independent member for Manly. He ran the Nature Conservation Council of NSW and then the Australian Conservation Foundation helping forge links with farmers and business developing solutions on salinity and climate change.
He worked for World Vision where he co-convened the Make Poverty History campaign.

He is also active with the Southern Cross Climate Coalition. the ACF/ACTU/ACOSS.

Towards a Green New Deal was launced in February 2009.

The Southern Cross Climate Coalition joined with the Property Council, the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees and the Australian Green Infrastructure Council to call for a three pronged green approach economic stimulus, based around green construction,sustainable infrastructure and green jobs.

This major lobbying pressure group is well positioned to counter the polluters’ corprate lobby at present controlling Minister Wong and the government. We watch with interest.
